Places of interest
Throughout the local region, there are numerous mediaeval towns and villages, chateaux and churches to be explored, each with their own character and charm. For example, the fabulous Chateau de la Rochfoucauld is 40 minutes southeast, and the fairytale Chateau de Verteuil-sur-Charente is 10 minutes south. There are the remains of a Roman amphitheatre at Embourie. There are many 'Plus Beaux Villages de France' to be visited, most of them easily reached on a day out. The haunting WW2 'museum' village of Oradour sur Glane, on the way to Limoges, is well worth a visit. The drive down to Cognac is particularly beautiful, winding through endless sloping vineyards, picturesque chateaux, towns and villages. And Cognac itself is obviously quite spectacular.
