The Atlantic Coast

The Atlantic Coast
If you want a complete change from the countryside, chateaux, rivers and lakes of the Charente, and fancy a day at the seaside, the departement of Charente Maritime lies between Villiers le Roux and the sea. Rochefort, La Rochelle, the white sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast and the gorgeous islands, Ile d'Oleron and Ile de Rhe, are approximately 1hr 30 - 1hr 45 drive west.  You can get there via a glorious scenic cross-country route, or you can get there via the motorways and dual-carriageways for a quicker, but longer route.
